It\u2019s located just outside of Toronto, Canada, and offers Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, MMA, boxing, wrestling, and kickboxing for adults and kids.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>He went from running a 2,000 sq ft gym with 70 members on the brink of bankruptcy to managing a 10,000 sq ft facility with over 700 members. Before owning a gym, he was a professional fighter and trained under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ottawamartialarts\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Castiglia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\ud83d\udcac Stay tuned, Gym World\u2014we\u2019ll be hearing from Nick soon.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>While working a restaurant job, Brendan dreamed of opening a martial arts gym. He saw that Nick had good:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/usekilo.com\/these-gym-owners-built-world-class-communities\/\">Culture<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite not knowing how to operate, Brendan quit his job and tried to replicate Nick\u2019s gym back in his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\ud83d\udcac Kalsamrit Martial Arts opened in 2011. The gym was 2,500 sq ft with 70 members, each paying $70 CAD ($52 USD) a month.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Brendan learned hard lessons early on and made costly mistakes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He got taken advantage of.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He didn\u2019t negotiate his lease and ended up paying for electrical, plumbing, and construction costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He gave away free memberships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\ud83d\udcac With the gym losing money, Brendan sold his house and car to keep it afloat and ended up moving into the gym.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>A year after opening, Nick started mentoring Brendan. That\u2019s when things began to turn around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He found a bigger unit with cheaper rent and a better landlord<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He doubled his prices to $140 CAD ($104 USD) a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He attracted higher-quality clients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He hired a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usekilo.com\/this-crossfit-gym-has-over-3000-members\/\">front desk person<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He grew to 400 members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He became profitable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\ud83d\udcac Brendan eventually opened a second location and grew it to 350 members. After running it for 5-6 years, he sold it and used the money to expand his first location.<br><br>Though the gym was profitable, Brendan says he was always grinding. As the competitions grew, Brendan started inviting other gyms to join.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he rents out large venues for three Muay Thai shows and two Jiu-Jitsu tournaments each year. Registration is $100, and admission ranges from $10-$20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\ud83d\udcac These events usually draw around 1,000 people, and Brendan says he makes $20,000 per event.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usekilo.com\/look-inside-americas-biggest-weightlifting-club\/\">SoCal Weightlifting Club<\/a>, Brendan has been running events for 10 years and has built a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usekilo.com\/this-positioning-trick-made-this-gym-150k-in-a-week\/\">solid reputation<\/a>&nbsp;in the community.
